Anesthesiology Department
We have competent and experienced Anaesthetists responsible for all anaesthesia activities at ScanHealth Scandinavia. In this manner we wish to ensure our patients the best expertise and safety so that they may feel confident and secure on the day of surgery. We always examine our patients thoroughly beforehand and are always strict about the completion of the Declaration form. All conditions that can effect the operation or anaesthetic will be revealed by filling out the Declaration form so we know we can perform surgery with as little risk as possible.
Should it show that the patient is suffering from serious diseases in the lungs, heart or other organs we will refer them to a Specialist for further examination before we decide if the operation can be performed with us or the patient referred to a larger hospital. The patient´s safety is always the decisive factor in making our decision.
All patients must meet up fasting before surgery. This means that one must not eat, drink milk products or juice, must not smoke, not chew chewing-gum, and suck sweets or any such thing for six hours before the operation appointment.
All patients must be collected at the hospital by an adult and have an adult accompanying them until the next day. No patients are to be alone the first day or night after surgery. You will be sent/given pain relieving tablets before surgery. These are to be taken 2 hours before the operation. You may swallow these with a little water. Some patients will be sent antibiotic tablets. One of which is to be taken the evening before surgery and the other together with the pain-killers, 2 hours before surgery.
Most patients will get a light general anaesthetic, this means that you will sleep during the whole operation.
We use an anaesthetic form called TIVA (Total Intravenous Aesthetic) at our hospital. This means that all the anaesthetic drugs are injected directly into the bloodstream through a thin plastic tube inserted into the patient´s arm. Medicines are administered continually throughout the operation by help of a pump. When the operation is completed, the pump is stopped and the patient wakes in a matter of minutes.
We perform some operations under locale anaesthetic or we might only anaesthetise the area to be operated, e.g. the arm or foot. In these cases the patient will receive a relaxant as well. The type of anaesthetic used is decided in each individual case by the Anaesthetist.
You will be observed in our Recovery ward after surgery. State registered Nurses will watch over and take good care of you giving you food and drink before you leave. Most patients go home the first 30 minutes to 1 hour after surgery, in some cases it may be necessary to wait a few hours.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions regarding anaesthesia. You may contact us by telephone or email and can speak directly with the anaesthetist if so desirable.
